    Arisia!
I moved to Boston and forgot that I can go to cons now. *eyeroll*

So while I don't think I'll be going to the con itself, if anybody wants to grab a bite, give me a shout and I'll be there with bells on. Or at least a spiffy Wonder Woman hoodie.

    AKICIF: dishwashers.
I've had it. I hate doing dishes by hand. I know that such things as countertop/portable dishwashers exist...do any of you have them? Tell me all!

Clarification: I don't have room for a full-size one. A brief survey shows that there's a smaller-than-normal size as well as ones that will fit on a countertop. Those are what I can have.

    Ask a Medievalist!
(For once, I'm not the medievalist in question, though I suppose I could help out.)

Does anybody think there would be interest at cons in a Q&A/slideshow/presentation/whatever by a degreed, professional medievalist? There are a bunch of medieval PhDs floating around, but they're usually at cons as writers or fans, not academics.

If any of you think of a con that might be interested, leave a comment!

MAMMOTHS! (a petition for the saving thereof)
The fossilized mammoths in Waco need your help! If they're part of the National Park Service, they'll get a much nicer place to live lie where they fell. Bonus: fossilized camels!

Sign! Spread the word! Go see them!

    BOSTON: bookcases
At some point in my bookshelving/housewarming party, we were talking about bookcases. I offered aamcnamara the ones I forgot how to put back together, and somebody said they had a spare one too. Whoever it was, please ping her....

    I have REAL INTERNET.
I also have lots and lots of boxes, but fewer than I did yesterday when they all got here. Partly because I've been throwing things into my Hall Closet of Holding rather than dealing with them. But I'm at a day school now, so I'll be able to designate a weekend for sorting. *After* I have a visible floor again....

If you wish to come over Saturday, yay! There's a buzzer downstairs, below my mailbox, so you don't actually have to text me if you want to visit. \o/ 2-whenever. And I found the local Indian joint, which delivers!

edit: the local Indian joint, which delivers, is *good.*

    New plan!
I'm going from Austin to Boston (that'll never stop being funny) on the 13th. Oh hell, so I have to change my ticket YET AGAIN. God damn.

Local crash space and/or apartment hunting help would still be wonderful, though I'm dealing better than I was before.

    Halp? redux
NeoG points out that I have several trusted friends on the ground in Boston. Would any of you have time to go look at possible apartments now, without me, and give me advice/opinions? There are several on Craigslist right now that seem like they'd work, except for the part where I haven't laid eyes on them. I'm just really worried about getting back and finding that all the August rentals are gone.

I could also try getting out of the post-training Texas trip, but that would lead to parental grumbling. While not dysfunctional, it would be more irritating than I can deal with right now.

    Halp? (Boston househunting)
So I know that Boston's rent cycle starts on Sept 1, but I'm supposed to start school on the 5th and if I know schools, which I do, I will be expected to be on site in mid-August. Which means I need to find an apartment Aug. 1. I've tried moving and starting work the same week and it leads to heartbreak every time.

This means I have to find an apartment sometime after July 25, when I get back from Texas. I'm aware that this will be difficult, especially given that I have a cat, a car, and more books than the average landlord believes exist in the world.

Does anybody who knows Boston have the time to take me around Boston and environs, either in their car or on the T/C-rail? If in your car, parking's on me. Lunch, coffee, and other restoratives will also be on me.

I also need crash space because I don't expect to find anything on the first day. Although I'm willing to suck it up and pay for a hotel, although holy shit, Boston prices, wow.

No, is too long. I will sum up.
Horrendous end of school, packing to move, crashing on NeoG's couch...Random had a panic attack on the BQE and clawed his way out of the (soft-sided) carrier. That wasn't fun, but if you ever need a vet in Queens, go to Blue Pearl. They were fabulous. And they sedated him for the rest of the trip yay! Then I drove through Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island in rush hour.

Then today I had two interviews with a Boston day school. (The first one was on Saturday, while I was packing like a fiend, and I thought it was fun but wasn't really paying attention.) After a nice dinner, I checked my email and found an offer letter. \o/

I really hope this one works out. I haven't given up on finding a forever place....

yo, old Callahanians: passing the hat
    Via Rikibeth:

"</a></b></a>louisadkins, </a></b></a>omimouse, and Jade are stranded in a small town in Wyoming on the way back to their home in West Virginia. They headed out from our place Friday, made good time on the trip, but the minivan they are driving started flickering with a oil pressure light and then ... pretty much died on the road. They have been able to get AAA to take them to a hotel and the vehicle to a mechanic's shop, but... the sounds the vehicle was making lead them to believe it's an engine failure.

"Which is $$$$. Which they don't have, and they have no way of getting back home otherwise. Louis's paypal is louis.adkins@hotmail.com and anything anyone can spare, bumping the word, passing this around, is much appreciated as time is something they don't have (due to cost of hotels, food, etc)."

I lost touch with Louis years, nay, decades ago...but here. Have a signal boost for old times' sake.

    *snrch*
OK so I'm panicking about the job situation, and therefore I spent a good chunk of the weekend watching _Person of Interest_, the show where Bruce hires Batman to do his legwork.* And what do you know, a comics-shop owner is telling kids that "oh, this one guy doesn't have any superpowers, he just saves people!"** while the camera is lingering on Batman's face.

In the episode I just finished, we had a three-line appearance by Lola Glaudini, and I noticed that the...I dunno, some kind of producer, is Amy Berg--who also worked on Eureka and Leverage. Plus that episode where Officer Montoya (aka Det. Carter, aka Snarky Black Detective Lady, aka STILL THE BEST OMG) decides that Batman (aka Reese) and his methods are incompatible with her oath as a police officer. See above re: STILL THE BEST OMG. Plus there's a Bullock equivalent, who is a lot more interesting than he seemed at first.

I might get fannish about this show after all. I hope the rest of it is good too.

*literally. Batman kneecaps people on a regular basis.
**of course, the guy does have the usual TV-hero superpower of Broken Ribs? What Broken Ribs?

    Microscopic book reports.
Shattered Pillars, Elizabeth Bear: Bansh! Tsering-la! EDENE!!!!!! The changing skies still creep me the hell out. Write faster, Bear, I'm dying to know which of my favorite characters (i.e. ALL OF THEM) are going to die horrible yet artistically necessary deaths.

Emilie and the Hollow World, Martha Wells: Emilie! RANI!!!!!! Another one to go on the list of "give this to ALL the girls."

Fated, Benedict Jacka: bought on a rec from Charlie Stross, as Laundry/Peter Grant methadone. It was pretty good, and I'm going to keep going in the series. Just, dude...if you invent a throwaway bureaucrat type, DO NOT name him "Barrayar." Seriously. Just don't. Also, naming a Dark mage after a famous TV SF bad guy, using the actor's physical description, and using the character's most famous line in an extremely predictable way? That's not an homage, that's fanfic. File off your serial numbers better next time. I just hope the next book doesn't include a romance, because I really hate teacher/student affairs--they tend to hit my incest squick.

    30+ inches?!
Or so I hear. I can't get out of my front door, on the sheltered side in a deepish alcove. Got to roust the boys for a round of "excavate the shovel and then the sidewalk". Kinda mad that the guy on duty didn't bring the shovel inside...

Best of all, we still have heat, lights, and Internet. So this can stay an adventure instead of a trial.

    DuckDuckGo failed me!
I needed a book and the easily-accessible online version didn't show up anywhere in DDG's results, or at least not before I got bored with scrolling.

Fortunately I have a million friends. Thank you all!

(public post so people know: DDG isn't Google yet.)
